Alternatives to Adobe Acrobat

Most people paying for Acrobat use three or four of its features and none of the rest. Everything below covers a comparable set of jobs, so the useful comparison is not the feature list - it is whether your files stay on your device, whether redaction genuinely removes content rather than covering it, and what each one costs to start, with the period the figure covers, instead of the annual rate on the pricing page.

Worth knowing before you stay or go: Free online use is severely limited - roughly one transaction without signing in, and about one premium transaction per 30 days once signed in. Files are uploaded to Adobe's servers rather than processed in the browser. There is no universal 100 MB limit: the vendor FAQ distinguishes ordinary tools, Word and PowerPoint conversion, compression and splitting, and gives its own page and file counts for merging, so those distinctions are kept rather than one aggregate maximum. The one-per-30-days premium allowance is documented, while free signed-in filling, signing, commenting and sharing differ from it. Acrobat is a broader family than two products: free Reader, the online tools and the paid desktop editions are separate, and Pro-only redaction and accessibility capabilities are not attributed to all of them. Applied removal, sanitisation of hidden data and saving the result are workflow stages rather than the same thing as drawing an annotation, and the separate Adobe developer products are linked without implying the consumer online editor has an API.

The short answer

The closest Adobe Acrobat alternatives in this index are Foxit PDF Editor , PDF Studio and Xodo . They share enough of the job to be worth comparing, which is why they are on this page - a shared job tag is a candidate, not a finding that they work the same way. What separates them from Adobe Acrobat is what they charge and whether your file leaves your machine. Adobe Acrobat processes some versions on your device and runs others on a server, which the vendor documents, and 1 of the 6 listed have no vendor service in the path .

A tool marked same owner is operated by the same company as Adobe Acrobat. That does not make it bad, but it is not an independent alternative - switching to it does not change who holds your documents or sets your terms.

1 of the 6 is desktop or command-line software, so there is no server in the path at all - PDF Studio. That is a statement about how the software is built rather than something we measured, which is why the files column words it differently from a tool we tested.
