Where your files are processed
Mixed - depends on version and feature
The vendor's own documentation separates them. On the device: Xodo PDF Studio on Windows, macOS and Linux. On their servers: Xodo Web tools that require an upload. A single answer for the whole product would be wrong for one of them.
It depends on the tool rather than on the product, in the vendor's own words: "Most tools process files on your device locally. Files are permanently deleted after 1h for those that require upload." So the majority of the browser tools are on-device, some require an upload to Apryse's servers, and the desktop editor works offline.
That is a split a single yes or no cannot carry, which is why the processing state is recorded as mixed and the editions name which side each one is on. The one hour deletion and the on-device processing are the vendor's statements; we have not tested either, and the vendor does not say which tools fall into which group.
What it does
Xodo is Apryse's cross-platform PDF suite, sold in three parts: Xodo Web with 40 or more online tools, Xodo PDF Studio for Windows, macOS and Linux with 60 or more, and Xodo Mobile for Android and iOS. Between them they cover reading, annotating, editing text, filling forms, compressing, merging, splitting and rearranging pages, converting to and from more than 30 formats including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, HTML and DICOM, OCR on scans, comparing two documents, redacting, adding passwords and signing.
Apryse's own account of how files are handled is that most tools process them on the device, and that files are permanently deleted after an hour for the tools that require an upload.
Best for
People who want one PDF toolkit across a browser, a desktop and a phone, and who would rather most jobs kept the file on the device.
Worth knowing
Free use of the web tools is real but metered at one action a day, which is fine for a single job and not for a batch. The figures here are the vendor's dollar prices on annual billing, and monthly billing costs more.
The 40% discount on the Document Suite is a promotion for new annual subscriptions running through 31 December 2026, though it continues on renewal. Xodo Sign is a separate e-signature product with its own pricing rather than part of these plans.
Which tools stay on your device and which need an upload is the vendor's statement, as is the one hour deletion, and neither is a test we ran.
Details, and where each comes from
Vendor statements, our own reading of their pages, and the things nobody has established yet, each answered separately. Where we have not confirmed something it says so rather than guessing, and a row nobody has established is greyed out.

What the redaction verdict rests on
From the vendor's own documentation, read 5 October 2026. Not tested by us.
“Redact PDF - Permanently redact and black out sensitive information in PDFs”
What that does not establish
The vendor claims permanence and Apryse sells the redaction engine behind several products in this index, but we have not opened an output file to confirm the text is gone. A claim of permanence is the category where a redaction test earns its keep, so this is worth a canary run rather than more reading.
What the vendor says
Claims are labelled rather than repeated as fact. Where we have checked something ourselves, it says so and shows when. Checked means we read the vendor's own page and it says what we recorded - not that we tested the behaviour, unless the note says we did.
-
“Save 40% off Xodo Document Suite, for life.”
Reported by the vendor
Each claim is quoted from the vendor's own pages. This section describes what we have and have not checked - it is not a judgement about anyone.
