View a PDF
Reading is what most people actually do with a PDF, and it is the one job where the tool barely matters - until you need to search a scanned document, annotate it, or sign it. A reader that opens instantly and handles a hundred-megabyte drawing is worth more than one with a longer feature list.
33 tools here do less than the name of this job suggests, and each one's profile says what it actually does. That sentence is on the profile rather than repeated on every row.
33 options · Sources read 18 October 2026 · Reading tools are the least tested category here. We check whether each one is available and what the vendor documents, and we have not opened documents in most of them.
- What it takes, and what it produces
- In: a PDF. Out: the page on screen, and whatever the viewer can export on top of that.
- What limits it
- Nothing a vendor publishes, because what constrains a viewer is the document and the machine. Large drawings and heavy pages are where a reader notices, and that is a fact about the file rather than a quota.

These are different ways to do the same job. The order does not indicate quality, and where we have not checked something the row says so rather than guessing.

-
Our pick 7: Free, open source, no subscription and no bundled software. The reader to install when you want nothing else installed.
-
Our pick 6: A KDE viewer with native PDF annotations and a GPLv2+ licence, so the marks travel inside the document.
Every listing here is a real product with a real website, checked for whether it is still working. Nothing on this page is paid for and no placement can be bought. Where we have not verified something, the row says so rather than guessing.
Choosing between the reader you already have and one built for reading
-
The browser built into your system
Nothing to install and it opens instantly, which is most of what reading needs. Searching a scan, annotating, and reading with a screen reader are where it usually stops.
-
A dedicated reader
Better annotation, better keyboard navigation, and a memory of where you were. Worth installing if you read long documents rather than opening one now and then.
-
One that can search a scan
Searching a scanned document needs a text layer, which means OCR has already been run on it. A viewer that cannot do that will find nothing in a scan however good it is otherwise.
Check the result
- - Search for a word you can see on a scanned page. If nothing is found, the file has no text layer yet.
- - Annotate a document, save it, and open it in a different viewer to check the notes travelled with the file.
- - Open your largest document. Memory use, not features, is what makes a reader unpleasant on a big drawing.
- - If you use a screen reader, check the reading order rather than only whether the text is readable.
Sources and scope
Every fact on this page comes from a vendor's own page. Each profile records the URL we read, the date, and the SHA-256 of the text, so a reader can check the bytes.
