Tesseract OCR vs OCRmyPDF

The OCR engine, and the tool built on top of it.

The short answer

The distinction is the input. For a scanned PDF that needs a searchable text layer, OCRmyPDF is the tool: it takes a PDF in and gives a PDF back. For OCR on images, or for calling recognition from your own code, Tesseract is the engine underneath and is what you want directly. Tesseract does not read PDFs, so a PDF workflow that starts with Tesseract has to rasterise the pages first.

The difference that decides it

They are layers rather than rivals. Tesseract is the recognition engine that does the reading; OCRmyPDF drives it to put a searchable text layer into a PDF, which is what most people actually want. So the choice is about the shape of the job rather than quality: PDF in and PDF out points at OCRmyPDF, images or a custom integration points at Tesseract directly. If you are embedding OCRmyPDF, read its current dependency documentation rather than an older guide: pypdfium2 is listed there as an alternative to Ghostscript, so Ghostscript is not strictly required, while older and platform-packaged builds may differ and the licence of what you ship depends on the components you include.
