Edit
Browse all edit toolsediting PDF content with Soda PDF, where the desktop help article documents Edit mode with text font, bold and italic, font size, font colour and further adjustments including superscript and subscript, and the online PDF editor page describes editing a PDF in the browser and notes that text in a scanned PDF needs the separate OCR capability; the scope records direct text editing and formatting, leaves scanned-page text recognition to the OCR job, and makes no layout-stability guarantee
Convert
Browse all convert toolsconverting PDFs with Soda PDF, where the PDF converter page documents converting a PDF to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, image or HTML and converting the other way, with automatic format detection and the claim that the content layout is preserved, and the desktop 15 overview lists a Create Convert ribbon tab; the desktop system requirements state that Microsoft Office 2007 or later is required for plug-in conversion to Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and the scope records the documented conversion directions with no fidelity guarantee
Merge
Browse all merge toolsmerging PDFs with Soda PDF, where the PDF Merge page documents combining multiple PDF files, arranging the file order, optionally editing the merged document and downloading, emailing or saving the result to Soda PDF online storage, OneDrive or Dropbox, and the desktop 15 overview lists a Page tab; the scope records the documented combine, order and output operations with no claim about preserving signatures, forms or annotations across a merge
Protect
Browse all protect toolsprotecting PDFs with Soda PDF, where the password protection page documents requiring a password to open a document, restricting permissions including editing, printing and copying while still allowing the file to be opened, and a separate unlock tool; the page describes 256-bit AES as the strongest PDF encryption and says 128-bit AES is no longer supported by PDF 2.0; the help centre documents a separate Redaction tool in the Secure module that permanently deletes information after the marked areas are applied, and a separate whiteout tool; the scope records the password and permission workflow with the vendor's encryption statement, keeps permanent deletion as the vendor's redaction claim, and does not merge whiteout into redaction
Compress
Browse all compress toolscompressing PDFs with Soda PDF, where the Compress PDF page documents Regular compression as an estimated 40 percent reduction that preserves good quality and High compression as up to 85 percent for maximum space or email, with the compressed result downloaded as a zipped file, and the desktop 15 overview lists a Compress tool; the scope records the two vendor-described levels and estimated reductions, and makes no lossless or guaranteed size-reduction claim
Sign
Browse all sign toolssigning PDFs with Soda PDF, where the desktop help centre documents two separate routes: the E-Sign module, with Sign your Document for dragging signature and initials fields and adding date, name and email, and Request Signature for sending a document package to one or more signers by email with tracking in the inbox, and a local Digital Signature that uses a certificate stored in the Windows environment and an appearance image; the E-Sign versus digital signature article says each is legally binding and explains that the local certificate can only be verified on the system it came from while E-Sign authentication is managed outside the local system, and the digital signature article says that feature is desktop only; the page also advertises signing and requesting signatures online; the scope separates E-Sign from the certificate-based digital signature and makes no independent legal-validity, certificate-authority or timestamping guarantee
OCR
Browse all ocr toolsrunning OCR with Soda PDF, where the help centre documents an OCR module with Recognize Document for scanned pages and OCR settings, with Auto and Manual recognition of individual images, and an OCR language article listing 25 detected languages: English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, Arabic, Bulgarian, Catalan, Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Greek, Norwegian, Polish, Slovak, Swedish, Turkish and Ukrainian, with the engine set to detect all languages by default; the article documents the language setting in both the desktop app and Soda PDF Online, and the support material also covers OCR Search and OCR Edit; the scope records the documented OCR workflow and the 25-language help list, makes no accuracy guarantee and does not claim a different language count
Where your files are processed
Mixed - depends on version and feature
The vendor's own documentation separates them. On the device: Windows desktop. On their servers: Web. A single answer for the whole product would be wrong for one of them.
It is a desktop application for Windows, and the vendor reports that desktop work is offline, with online AI and cloud features as separate surfaces. Browser access on macOS, Linux and mobile is not a native edition, so the two are recorded apart rather than represented as the same product on every platform.
Whiteout is kept separate from applied redaction.
What it does
Soda PDF is a commercial PDF suite from Avanquest Software SAS, with a Windows desktop application for offline work and a browser edition that runs across platforms and adds cloud storage, AI document chat, translation and e-signature workflows. The current desktop release is Soda PDF 15, and the plans page sells Pro, Team and Business subscriptions with prices behind a See prices link rather than published amounts.
Coverage is broad: edit, create and convert to and from Office formats, merge, split, compress, OCR, forms, batch operations, comments, redaction and two separate signing routes, a local certificate-based digital signature and the E-Sign service. The vendor confirms all plans are subscriptions and that no perpetual licence is offered.
Best for
Offices and teams that want one vendor for both a desktop PDF editor and a browser workflow, and are willing to pay an annual subscription.
Worth knowing
Prices are not published: the plans page shows See prices for Pro, Team and Business, and the checkout redirect did not render a readable figure, so no monthly or annual price is asserted here. The site sells Soda PDF 15 while a help article updated on 10 October 2026 still describes Soda PDF 14 with Standard, Pro and Business licence names, so the plan names and allowances need checking against the checkout rather than the help centre.
The free online tools are limited to 2 files a day or a 3 MB maximum, except editing, OCR, forms, reader and the AI tools, which can be tried but only downloaded, printed, emailed or saved on a paid plan. The AI assistant, translation, chat with PDF and cloud storage are online-only and depend on Soda's servers.
The desktop app is Windows only; the browser app is what runs on macOS, Linux, iOS and Android, and no native builds for those platforms were found. The vendor describes 256-bit AES as the strongest PDF encryption and says 128-bit AES is no longer supported by PDF 2.0.
Whiteout and redaction are separate tools: the current whiteout article says anything under the box is removed, while the record previously described whiteout as covering content, so the vendor wording is recorded rather than a behavioural claim, and the dedicated Redaction tool remains the permanent-deletion path. E-Sign and digital signatures are separate: E-Sign authenticates outside the local system and the local digital signature uses a certificate stored in Windows that can only be verified on the system it came from.
The desktop app needs internet for activation and updates and Microsoft Office 2007 or later for plug-in conversion to Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Details, and where each comes from
Vendor statements, our own reading of their pages, and the things nobody has established yet, each answered separately. Where we have not confirmed something it says so rather than guessing, and a row nobody has established is greyed out.

Plans are subscriptions called Pro, Team and Business, with no perpetual licence; the plans page shows See prices rather than amounts and the checkout did not render a readable price, so no current price is asserted.
The free online tools are limited to 2 files a day or a 3 MB maximum except for editing, OCR, forms, reader and the AI tools, which require a paid plan to download, print, email or save. E-sign data is processed and stored in Canada (Ontario), signed documents and audit trails are kept up to 10 years, and unsigned or expired requests are deleted after 90 days of inactivity; web files are described as deleted within 24 hours.

What the redaction verdict rests on
From the vendor's own documentation, read 16 October 2026. Not tested by us.
“Soda PDF Desktop has a Redaction tool. This will permanently delete information from your document. It’s the digital equivalent of redacting physical documents.”
What that does not establish
Vendor support documentation read again on 2026-10-16, not a test we ran. The sentence is identical, word for word, to PDFsam Enhanced’s and PDF Architect’s articles, which makes it stock support copy about a component the vendors may licence from the same place rather than three independent descriptions of three tested behaviours.
The article describes the DESKTOP product and the Secure module, and the redaction is applied after marking; the separate whiteout tool now says anything under its box is removed, so the two tools remain distinct and whiteout is not treated as redaction.

What the vendor says
Claims are labelled rather than repeated as fact. Where we have checked something ourselves, it says so and shows when. Checked means we read the vendor's own page and it says what we recorded - not that we tested the behaviour, unless the note says we did.

“Trusted by more than 425 000 users”
Checked by us - the source says this Read 22 September 2026
Confirmed verbatim: the page states "Trusted by more than 425 000 users", with the space-separated thousands separator preserved as the vendor wrote it. No source or date accompanies the figure.
It is the most modest social-proof number in this tier - an order of magnitude below SignWell's 80,000 businesses and four orders below CamScanner's 300 million - and the only one in the batch that a commercial PDF suite of this size could plausibly have. That is not verification, and the finding should not be read as one; it is the observation that this figure does not strain belief the way Smallpdf's does.

How we checked
Re-verified verbatim on 2026-09-22: https://www.sodapdf.com/plans/ re-rendered in headless Chrome with scripts/render-page.mjs and the claim's wording found in the rendered text. Originally verified on 2026-09-21. sourceHash is the SHA-256 of the re-rendered text, held as rv-www-sodapdf-com-plans-454102a8.txt.
Each claim is quoted from the vendor's own pages. This section describes what we have and have not checked - it is not a judgement about anyone.
