A desktop application and an embeddable SDK, documented as fully on-premises with no document data sent to PDFix servers or any cloud service. One caveat that belongs with the verdict: two optional AI actions in the vendor's own marketplace do send page images to Amazon Textract and content to OpenAI, so the no-upload position is true of the core product and false for those specific actions. That is a property of the library itself: what an application built with it does with your file depends on that application, not on this.

Core Desktop and SDK processing is local/on-premises on Windows, macOS and Linux, and the SDK is embedded in the customer's application. Optional AI Actions can send page images or content to Amazon Textract or OpenAI; those external actions are the exception, not evidence of a PDFix-hosted service.

License activation can be online or offline; no account is required for the free download.

What it does

PDFix is a desktop application and developer SDK for PDF accessibility work from PDFix s.r.o., with a US distributor PDFix-US LLC. The current official downloads identify PDFix Desktop 3.3.0 and PDFix SDK 9.3.0, available on Windows, macOS and Linux.

Desktop is a local GUI for PDF/UA, WCAG 2.1/2.2, Section 508 and EAA checking with veraPDF, plus auto-tagging, manual remediation, reading order, alt text, headings, tables, lists, forms and metadata editing. The SDK embeds the same accessibility engine in Python, C#, Java, C++, Node.js and CLI workflows, with programmatic auto-tagging, remediation, validation and conversion.

Core Desktop/SDK processing is local/on-premises, and the FAQ describes the SDK as fully on-premises. However, the optional AI Actions marketplace includes external actions such as Amazon Textract and OpenAI that can send page images or content to those third-party services; the vendor tells users to check each action's data handling.

Desktop Lite and SDK Lite are permanently free; Desktop Pro is EUR 350 or USD 599 per user per year and Enterprise is EUR 1,000 per user per year; SDK commercial tiers are quote-only. Free downloads can use the features without registration or time limit but saved documents can carry a watermark.

The vendor's blanket 'no cloud upload' language therefore applies to core processing, not to every optional AI action; check each action's data handling for sensitive documents.

The Desktop GUI and the embedded SDK are distinct; there is no PDFix-hosted REST/SaaS edition of this product, and networking by SDK customers does not create one. Desktop and SDK are proprietary binaries; free use is not the same as open source, and the EULA's Apache-2.0 Free License does not establish that the product source is available.

The page separately claims automatic removal of all private information and personal data connected to the redacted area, which is a broader claim and is not established by that sentence.
