Heavier features such as editing existing text and images, merging, compression, conversion, watermarking, 256-bit encryption, certificate signing and permanent redaction sit in the paid Windows Desktop app included with Premium or Ultimate, and no Desktop version number is published on the pages read. Premium is USD 5.99 billed monthly or USD 2.99 per month billed yearly; Ultimate is USD 8.99 billed monthly or USD 5.99 per month billed yearly.

Worth knowing

The free online editor uploads the PDF to US servers, caps each file at 10 MB, stores at most 10 files and keeps recent-file history for 7 days, while Premium and Ultimate raise the online limits to 40 MB, 100 stored files and 30 days or no expiration respectively; PDFescape also warns of further undisclosed limits on image sizes, page sizes, print page counts and usage rates. The free online service is ad-supported but adds no logo or watermark to the file.

Its strongest capabilities need the paid Windows Desktop app: editing existing text and images, merging multiple PDFs, conversion to Word and other formats, compression, 256-bit encryption and password protection, certificate signing and sealing, and permanent redaction are documented under the Desktop section, with redaction and the strongest security in Ultimate, not the free browser. The free online editor lists password encryption but does not state the algorithm, so no algorithm is claimed for that tier.

Whiteout in the browser is not redaction; the permanent blackout tool is a Desktop Ultimate feature. Signing is an Ultimate Desktop capability, not the free online editor, and no certificate-authority or legal-validity guarantee is made.

This is the most specific storage-location statement recorded in this tier, and it also settles the question the claim's tier exists to ask: PDFescape's files are on the vendor's servers, so this is an upload tool and the sentence says so plainly rather than implying otherwise.

    Two further sentences from the same paragraph are worth having. The vendor states "Our servers are checked on a regular basis by an outside security agency to assess the security of our systems", which names a control without naming the agency or a frequency, and it is the kind of statement that could be substantiated with a report and is not.

    And the paragraph is framed as reassurance rather than as policy - "We consider your PDF files to be quite safe" and "We hold your privacy and data security in the highest regards" - which is the register the whole statement is written in.
