Nitro PDF Pro
Commercial PDF editor and eSign suite for Windows, Mac and iOS.
Where your files are processed
Mixed — depends on version and feature
The vendor's own documentation separates them. On the device: Nitro PDF Pro installed on Windows and macOS. On their servers: Smart Tools online services. A single answer for the whole product would be wrong for one of them.
It depends on the feature. The installed editor works on files on the machine, and that is distinct from the online services: the current documentation places Smart Redact, extraction and PDF chat inside Smart Tools, and the guide describes those as online services requiring a Nitro account with admin-controlled access. An absolute no-server badge cannot describe both, so the processing state is recorded per feature and AI redaction is not described as exclusively a separate application, nor is every desktop licence treated as including every online service.
What it does
Nitro PDF Pro is a commercial desktop PDF editor and e-signing product for Windows, macOS and iOS, sold as a subscription or licence. It handles editing, conversion, annotation, OCR, securing and signing, and connects to Microsoft 365, Salesforce, SharePoint and cloud storage. It is the individual-product front end of a wider Nitro platform whose bulk e-signing, AI redaction and automation capabilities are sold separately.
Best for: Businesses and professionals who want one commercially supported PDF editor with e-signing and Microsoft 365 or SharePoint integration rather than a free tool.
Worth knowing: There is no free tier, only a 14-day trial, so it is a recurring or licence cost. The higher-value capabilities — bulk e-signing, AI redaction, automation and APIs — live in other Nitro products, and we could not read current prices from the vendor's pricing page. Applied redaction is vendor-documented content removal with untested output, and metadata removal is a separate operation rather than part of the same claim. The desktop record no longer carries an HTTP API entry, because no PDF Pro specific endpoint is documented; the separately scoped developer products are linked instead.
Details, and where each comes from
Vendor statements, our own reading of their pages, and the things nobody has established yet, each answered separately. Where we have not confirmed something it says so rather than guessing, and a row nobody has established is greyed out.

What the redaction verdict rests on
From the vendor's own documentation, read 22 September 2026. Not tested by us.
“With intuitive tools, you maintain complete control to review, adjust, and publish documents with permanent, untraceable redactions.”
What that does not establish: The vendor’s product page, not a test we ran — and not the step-by-step guidance, which is the more specific source and describes the mechanism differently by platform. The Windows documentation states permanent removal explicitly, while the Mac documentation says only that text can be blocked out or erased. Read this against the platform you actually use.
What the vendor says
Claims are labelled rather than repeated as fact. Where we have checked something ourselves, it says so and shows when. Checked means we read the vendor's own page and it says what we recorded — not that we tested the behaviour, unless the note says we did.

“Edit, convert, secure, and sign PDF with annotation, OCR, and more. Compatible with Mac, Windows, and iOS. Try free for 14 days.”
Checked by us — the source only partly supports this Read 21 September 2026
Partial, and for a reason the campaign has not recorded before: the recorded quotation is stale rather than wrong. The page no longer carries "Edit, convert, secure, and sign PDF with annotation, OCR, and more". Its strapline now reads "Edit, convert, secure, and automate with the AI-powered PDF solution that includes everything teams need for faster, smarter work. Try free for 14 days. No credit card required, no hidden fees." Of the claim's three components, two survive: the 14-day trial is verbatim, and the platform list appears as "across Windows, Mac, and iOS" against the claim's "Mac, Windows, and iOS". The third does not survive in any form — OCR and annotation are named nowhere on the page, and "sign" is replaced by "automate". So the source supports part of the claim and no longer carries the rest. This is a defect in our record rather than a contradiction by the vendor, and it is the first stale quotation found in this campaign, which is itself the finding: claims sourced from marketing straplines change without notice, and the index has no mechanism that would notice. Recorded as partial rather than refuted because the page does not say otherwise about OCR — it simply no longer says this.

How we checked: https://www.gonitro.com/pdf rendered in headless Chrome with scripts/render-page.mjs on 2026-09-21 (visible text 11397 bytes) and the claim checked against that text, including a search for each of the claim's components separately. sourceHash is the SHA-256 of the rendered text.
Each claim is quoted from the vendor's own pages. This section describes what we have and have not checked — it is not a judgement about anyone.
