Sign
Browse all sign toolsrunning an electronic signature workflow in Documenso by uploading a PDF or starting from a template, assigning recipients as signers, approvers, viewers, assistants or CC, placing signature and other fields on the document and sending it for signing in parallel or in sequence, after which each recipient signs by drawing, typing or uploading a signature image and the completed PDF is sealed at the platform level with an X.509 certificate that proves integrity and authenticity, with an audit log attached and an optional trusted timestamp from a time stamping authority
Where your files are processed
Mixed - depends on version and feature
The vendor's own documentation separates them. On the device: Self-hosted Community/Business/Enterprise. On their servers: Hosted web application, Hosted REST API. A single answer for the whole product would be wrong for one of them.
Documenso has three delivery modes. The hosted web app and hosted API run on Documenso infrastructure, and the current GDPR documentation says Documenso Cloud application data is stored in data centres within the European Union, document storage uses EU-based infrastructure, and backups are in geographically separate EU locations; the generic privacy policy also contains a US transfer/processing clause, so contractual/subprocessor details should be checked for a given deployment.
The self-hosted Community/Business/Enterprise editions run on the customer's own infrastructure and storage. The self-hosted edition is customer_server; the hosted web/API editions are vendor_cloud.
No single all-local or all-cloud claim fits the product.
What it does
Documenso is an open-source e-signature platform, currently at release 2.20.0 (8 October 2026), that can be self-hosted or used through the vendor's hosted cloud. You upload a PDF (or a DOCX that the server converts to PDF), add recipients and fields such as signature, date, name and text, then send it for signing with an audit trail, direct links and optional templates.
It prepares recipients, fields and workflow settings around the uploaded document; it does not modify the PDF's visible text, images or layout. The open-source Community Edition is AGPL-3.0 and free; the Business Edition is a fixed yearly self-hosted licence for production use; Enterprise is tailored/quote-based with SLAs and priority support.
Hosted plans run from Free (5 documents/month) through Individual, Teams and Platform. The hosted service is not the AGPL edition, and self-hosting is a deployment/data-location choice rather than a guarantee about every configured email, verification or webhook path.
Best for
Teams that want an auditable signing flow they can run on their own infrastructure, or a lower-cost hosted alternative to DocuSign; teams that need to modify PDF body text or layout should use a different content tool instead.
Worth knowing
It signs and tracks documents rather than modifying their visible PDF content: no redaction, compression, merging, OCR, layout changes or general content changes. Recipient/field/template configuration is workflow preparation, not document content modification.
The AGPL licence and the paid Business and Enterprise editions matter if you plan commercial self-hosting, and the project has paused external pull requests, so community contributions are limited to issue reports. Self-hosting decides where documents are stored, not what every configured path sends; recipient links, storage backends, verification and webhook integrations are configured rather than implied by the licence.
The current GDPR documentation states EU data centres for hosted application data and document storage, but the generic privacy policy contains a US transfer/processing clause, so check the DPA and subprocessors for a specific deployment. The hosted cloud and the AGPL Community Edition are different offers; hosted prices are current vendor list prices in USD and are not a price for the open-source edition.
No GBP price is verified and no currency conversion is made.
Details, and where each comes from
Vendor statements, our own reading of their pages, and the things nobody has established yet, each answered separately. Where we have not confirmed something it says so rather than guessing, and a row nobody has established is greyed out.

Open-source Community Edition under AGPL-3.0, with separate commercial self-hosted Business and Enterprise licences and hosted cloud plans. The Community Edition is free; the Business Edition is a fixed yearly licence for production use; Enterprise is tailored/quote-based with SLAs and priority support.
Hosted cloud is Free (5 documents/month), Individual USD 25/month, Teams USD 40/month including five users (additional users USD 8/month), and Platform USD 250/month. No GBP price is verified, so priceFromGbp remains null.
The cloud and self-hosted editions have different deployment and support terms; the hosted cloud is not the AGPL Community Edition.

What the redaction verdict rests on
From the vendor's own documentation, read 22 September 2026. Not tested by us.
What that does not establish
The vendor’s own site was read on 22 September 2026 and contains no mention of redaction, sanitisation, blackout or whiteout. Absence from a vendor’s own material is not proof that a feature does not exist - it may be undocumented, or on a page the reading did not reach - but for a NEGATIVE claim it is the strongest evidence available, and it is weaker than a positive quote.
Recorded as such rather than presented as certainty.
What the vendor says
Claims are labelled rather than repeated as fact. Where we have checked something ourselves, it says so and shows when. Checked means we read the vendor's own page and it says what we recorded - not that we tested the behaviour, unless the note says we did.
-
“Documenso aims to be the world's most trusted document-signing tool.”
Reported by the vendor Read 16 October 2026
Present as a vendor mission statement, not an independently verifiable fact. Downgraded from verified to reported rather than presenting it as a measured trust claim.

“Run Documenso in production on your own infrastructure.”
Reported by the vendor Read 16 October 2026
Confirmed on the current self-hosted page. This is a deployment statement, not a claim that every email/webhook/verification path stays on the customer infrastructure; those are configuration-dependent.

How we checked
Re-read the current self-hosted page on 2026-10-16; the sentence is present, and the page also documents the Community, Business and Enterprise self-hosted editions.
Each claim is quoted from the vendor's own pages. This section describes what we have and have not checked - it is not a judgement about anyone.
